2002 Events

Focus on the International Criminal Court, with Judge Philippe Kirsch (Fall 2002)

In Fall 2002 the Center hosted an address by Philippe Kirsch, who was then the Canadian Ambassador to Sweden and was subsequently elected to be the first president of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Kirsch had previously chaired the Preparatory Commission which drafted the Statute of the Court and was a prime mover in the creation of the ICC.

Human Rights Careers Seminar (Fall 2002)

Also in Fall 2002, the Center sponsored a Human Rights Careers Forum which brought four distinguished NYU graduates back to the School to share their own career experience and provide advice to current NYU students interested in careers in international human rights work.

The speakers were:

  • John Cerone (LLM 1999), Executive Director of the War Crimes Research Office at American University's Washington College of Law.
  • Sara Rakita (JD 1998), a consultant dealing with Africa at Human Rights Watch and the Ford Foundation.
  • Margaret Satterthwaite (JD 1999), then working for the Human Rights Section of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
  • Joe Saunders (JD 1993), Acting Program Director at Human Rights Watch.

Forum on Truth Commissions with International Center for Transitional Justice (December 2002)

In December 2002, the Center co-sponsored a discussion entitled 'Truth and Reconciliation Commissions: Confronting the Past', with the International Center for Transitional Justice. This event featured NYU Adjunct Professor Paul Van Zyl, Ancieto Guterres, Chairman of the East Timor Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation, Javier Ciurliza, Executive Secretary of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Graciela Meijide, Executive Secretary of the former Argentinian Truth Commission (CONADEP), and Marcie Mersky, Senior Staff Member of the Guatemalan Historical Clarification Commission.
